Acme Fresh Market Debuts Renovated Store

Front-Acme-2WEST AKRON — Acme Fresh Market officials unveiled the local grocer’s completed renovation of its Acme No. 1 store during a special event May 10. Pictured at right are Sophie and Steve Albrecht as they cut the ribbon held by Store Director Justin Bailey, at left, and President Jim Trout, at right. The local grocer was founded 125 years ago as the Fred W. Albrecht Co. by Steve Albrecht’s great-grandfather.

Company officials said the $9 million project took a little more than a year and resulted in the addition of 9,000 square feet to the store, located at 1835 W. Market St.

“It’s a new era for Acme No. 1,” said Trout, who, along with Acme Fresh Market Executive Vice President Nick Albrecht thanked company officials, store associates and customers.

“This was one of the most complex projects we had at Acme Fresh Markets,” Trout said. “It was challenging for our customers.” The store remained open throughout the renovation.

“I want to thank our customers for a year and a half of patience,” Nick Albrecht said.

He added the improved store would fulfill two purposes: to help the company stay competitive and ensure its mission to feed local families continues.

The renovated store includes an expanded prepared foods selection, a doubled-in-size natural and organics department, and a much larger selection of wines, Nick Albrecht said. It also features a second-floor community room that can be used for meetings and gatherings, as well as a café on the first floor. The store will continue the celebration with a free sampling event May 14-15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Over 15 different food samples — including cupcakes with made-from-scratch buttercream icing, Pavs Creamery ice cream and Acme Fresh Market Coffee, locally roasted by Pearl Coffee in Downtown Akron — will be featured.

Krumroy-Cozad Construction completed the renovation, and Schumacher Design oversaw décor, according to company officials.
